The successful entrepreneurial and family history of Rigamonti began more than a century ago and has crossed many generations. An adventure which began in the early twentieth century in the historic centre of Sondrio: it was 1913 when Francesco Rigamonti decided to open a workshop with annexed butcher’s-cured meats shop in which, following the secrets of ancient recipes handed down locally, he began to prepare the bresaola, air-dried salted beef, a product which then, like today, is a symbol of Valtellina.

It was a time in which the first cars started to travel and a growing number of tourists came to the heart of the Alps for the first time to ski or climb the austere peaks of the Bernina and Ortles Cevedale. Here they could enjoy the healthy, pure air of the “Magnificent Land”, as the zone around Bormio was called.

In the tourist itineraries a stop-off at Sondrio to make purchases was a must. Soon, thanks to “word of mouth”, the Rigamonti cured meats factory in the city centre became known for the kindness and cordiality with which Francesco welcomed outsiders offering them rich plates of bresaola to try. The passion, dedication and care with which this delicious product was prepared ensured that in a few years Rigamonti bresaola became famous even outside Valtellina.

The true turning point came in 1928 when in the height of the post-war period the cured meats factory took part in the Milan Trade Fair in Milan. The event, which had considerable success, was the first great step towards the large-scale sale of bresaola which finally achieved the international visibility it deserved.

The commitment, efforts and constant dedication of its founder were awarded and the customers grew to the point that in the late 1950s, Giovanni and Emilio Rigamonti who had taken over management of the activity, opened the first production facility which is now the company’s registered office, in Montagna in Valtellina. Subsequently, as orders and turnover increased two other production facilities were opened in Poggiridenti in the 1970s and Mazzo in Valtellina in 1986. Today, Rigamonti is the unrivalled leader of Bresaola production, with a turnover of more than 100 million euro and exports its products to 23 countries worldwide. Since 2010 it has been part of the JBS SA group, a Brazilian company with registered office in Sao Paolo. Established in 1953, it is the world’s largest meat producer, present in more than 20 countries around the world with exports to over 150 markets. With more than 200,000 employees, JBS avails of 340 production units and serves more than 300,000 customers worldwide, making it the global leader in the sector.

OUR MISSION

Faithful to our origins, today, like a hundred years ago, we put excellence first. Our bresaola is prepared by the skilful hands of master cured meat producers who select the best beef, obtained from cattle which are bred outdoors, the finest quality spices that come from all over the world and follow recipes and ancient and rigorous methods of production like slow and wise seasoning.

The trays of Bresaola della Valtellina PGI Rigamonti enclose the excellence of the best beef selected in Europe and South America.

In South America and, in particular, Brazil, Rigamonti selects beef from cattle bred in the open and free to graze on vast areas: the animals here are fed exclusively on grass for at least 18 months, and then fed only with selected and controlled feed. The quality of the extraordinary raw material which results is guaranteed by one of the most authoritative international certification bodies, CSQA, through continuous audits, and following the most rigid qualitative and hygienic-sanitary parameters. It assures absolute excellent standards.

Rigamonti is also part of the Brazilian company JBS Group, world leader in meat production, elected best company in Brazil for its commitment to animal welfare.

Our bresaola, superior in terms of flavour and softness is the result of a perfect meeting between the best quality meats of the world and the oldest, knowledgeable tradition of Valtellina.

Certificates


Rigamonti is a member of the Consortium to protect Bresaola of Valtellina which was established to promote, enhance and protect this product from counterfeiting and unfair competition. Bresaola of Valtellina is protected by the PGI mark attributed by the European Union. It can be used exclusively by certified producers of the province of Sondrio who follow the Production Protocol. The document, approved by the community, guarantees that the companies comply with the rigorous safety and health and hygiene quality standards in all production phases.
Rigamonti bresaola has also obtained important certificates over time which confirm the excellence of our way of doing things.

ONLY FROM CATTLE WHICH ARE BRED ON GRASSLAND AND OUTDOORS
It represents a new level of excellence for Rigamonti. CSQA, one of the most authoritative international certification bodies, guarantees that the bresaola of Valtellina PGI and Carpaccio of Bresaola Rigamonti are made exclusively from the meat selected from cattle which is rigorously bred on grassland and outdoors.

GLUTEN FREE
Certificate obtained by AIC, which indicates that Rigamonti products are suitable for consumption by people with celiac disease. The products contain a gluten content lower than 20 ppm according to what is indicated by the Ministry of Health.

HALAL ITALY
It certifies all outstanding products Made in Italy that comply with the Islamic rules of lawfulness (halal) in the agricultural-food, cosmetic, health, pharmaceutical, financial and insurance sectors.

UNI EN ISO 14001
Rigamonti is the only bresaola producer to have obtained this certification. The international standard UNI EN ISO 14001 is a globally recognised management system which provides a structure for the management of environmental performances, helping companies to keep the value of business high while effectively managing environmental responsibility.

IFS Food
The IFS standard (International Food Standard) relating to food safety is a model recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), both in Europe and in the rest of the world. Its purpose is to encourage the effective selection of branded food suppliers of the mass retailing sector, based on their ability to provide safe products that are compliant with contract specifications and legal requirements.

BRC (Global Standard for Food Safety)
The BRC (British Retail Consortium) is a global standard relating to food safety. It is recognised by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI), an international initiative, with the principle aim of strengthening and promoting food safety throughout the entire supply chain.
